VIENNA RAILWAY STATION
In 2004 the new construction of the Vienna railway station north was put out to tender by ÖBB Infrastruktur Bau AG after a long discussion phase. Due to the planned short construction time, the difficult geometric framework conditions and the cramped available space at the Praterstern, it was clear that the implementation could only be resolved by means of a steel supporting structure.
HASLINGER emerged as the best bidder in the tender process and was awarded the contract to implement the project as general contractor. The Praterstern traditionally combines the requirements of street and rail in the smallest of spaces. The train service is guided over the road traffic; the train platform level is thus 6.50 metres above street level. The Vienna railway station north with its external struts of 66 metres in width and 106 metres in length is, however, located at street level.
In order to be able to realise this project at all, perfect logistics were required. A building site right in the middle of the City of Vienna offers practically no storage areas. Added to this came restricted access possibilities over the tracks and the ongoing railway operation. Thus, the various components had to be produced in the factory in such a way that they could be immediately assembled following delivery without any storage time.
The same restrictions also applied to the subsequent subsections, which had to be implemented within the scope of the activity as general contractor.
Thus, 10,000 square metres of light roof elements, 1,800 square metres of glass roofing, 800 square metres of fire smoke jalousies, 5,000 square metres of glass façade in the most diverse of designs, and the façade cladding were delivered and assembled just-in-time.
The difficult framework conditions also applied to the control and information systems, the glass parapets on the train platforms and the development work for the new shopping areas.
The handover of the first construction stage ensued as planned on 17 July 2006.
