WITTENBURG (D)

SNOW FUN PARK WITTENBURG

One of the largest indoor skiing facilities in Europe has emerged In Wittenburg, half way between Berlin and Hamburg. On a total area of 35,000 square metres HASLINGER didn’t just build the steel indoor ski slope, as general contractor it was also responsible for the entire building project.

By the completion in September 2006, 5,500 tons of steel had been erected. In addition to a hotel complex with 120 rooms and the building sections housing the gastronomy operations, the indoor ski slope is the prominent core of the facility. The hall is 330 metres long and 120 metres wide. Real skiing is possible due to the building’s height of almost 70 metres, as at this height the slope achieves a maximum gradient of 30%. The hall also contains a halfpipe on which snowboard competitions can be held, aS it meets the international FIS standards.

The hall consists of four structurally separate elements, which are connected with each other via longitudinally movable expansion joints. The hall roof and piste are supported by half-timber framed binders, which are freely spanned over 40 metres at intervals of 15 metres. The hall cladding was designed like a cold store with insulation panels, in order to guarantee freezing point as the year-round room temperature. A particular challenge for the assembly was the airtight processing of the façade elements.
