Austria | Graz
The main station in Graz has a daily passenger footfall of around 30,000 rail passengers in one of the most important traffic hubs in Austria - in a few years, daily more than 40,000 passengers are expected to use the station.
A construction highlight is the wave-shaped roof that was erected in the area of the island platforms, covering these. The steel roofs are freely-tensioned wave-shaped load-bearing structures measuring over 40m. A particular challenge for the assemblers was the precise-fitting adjustment of the construction parts on the specially-made auxiliary construction for assembly. The geometrically-difficult construction parts were fitted and welded together on site to make a complete load-bearing structure. The situation whereby the roof construction had to be made with ongoing railway operation increased the demands placed on the construction site logistics.
