A two-track composite arch bridge over the Mur, what is known as the Kugelstein bridge, was built on the Vienna-Spielfeld/Strass route on behalf of ÖBB-INFRASTRUKTUR AG.
The load-bearing girders and suspenders of the support structure were made from structural steel, and the arch itself from reinforced concrete. In the case of an arch bridge with a road running underneath, the weight of the arch is absorbed by the girders, which join the two parts of the arch together. The road structure was made from reinforced steel. The rigid connection between the steel and the concrete is formed using welded head dowels. Round steel suspenders with forged joints at the ends were chosen as suspenders. Arch crossbeams made of reinforced concrete were used to reinforce the arch at arch level.
