Hungary | Szentgotthard
The Opel site in Szentgotthárd, Hungary, was expanded in 2011, making it one of the most modern engine plants in Europe.
The project comprised two construction phases: the conversion and expansion of current halls H16/H17, and the new construction of hall H18. The new hall is directly connected to the preexisting hall H17. The roof structure consists of a primary and secondary framework, plus a purlin layer as the sub-structure for the trapezoidal sheet metal support shell. The roof structure rests on cross support columns arranged in an axial grid of 20 x 20 m. The contract included the steel structure with fire protection coating (in some areas only!), the entire roof structure with roof drainage, the façade cladding, and special glazing for the south façade.
The schedule was very tight – only four months for 3,800 tons of steel with shell – which posed a great logistical challenge because a structure of some 1000 additional tons of steel had to be installed in the existing hall at the same time.
