Based on a cooperation with Breitenfeld Edelstahl AG, HASLINGER STAHLBAU has developed a highly complex steel construction that reduces noise and dust emissions, upgrading an existing plant to a low-emission standard.
The centrepiece of the plant, the "Dog House", features 2 movable steel bonnets, each with a net weight of 70 tonnes, enclosing the electric arc furnace.
They move several times an hour on roller tracks that have been precisely adapted to the confined space conditions. Due to the high wheel pressures of up to 66 tonnes, parts of the roller tracks were made from 990 x 400 mm solid material.
The noise protection bonnets, clad with 10 mm thick steel sheets, are built on a robust steel skeleton. They were prefabricated in segments and then trial-assembled. Sound insulation made of mineral wool panels further reduces noise emissions. The inner shell made of 10 mm thick steel panels was thermally separated and flexibly mounted to withstand extreme temperatures.
